Ingredients | Sauces Food in Costa Rica is
further enriched by wonderful spices and ingredients like oregano,
annatto, pepper, coriander, saffron, thyme, nutmeg and also the
various sauces like soy, Lizano and Worcestershire. These exotic
ingredients have given a unique flavor to the Costa Rican food. Costa Rica is a favorite for travel freaks and as a result of this the tourism industry is fast developing. This has been a contributing factor in the development of the Costa Rican cuisine and a blend of many other cooking genres of the world. There are some typical dishes in Costa Rica and they are the Casados and the Gallo pinto. The Gallo Pinto is eaten during breakfast with eggs and coffee accompanied by the traditional drink made from hot water and sugarcane sap, which is known as Agua Dulce. The Gallo Pinto is made from beans mixed with rice flavored with coriander, onions and some Worcestershire sauce. Casados is another dish that is a part of the daily diet of the Costa Ricans. This is a main course meal prepared from beans, rice, pork or chicken with some lettuce, cabbage, tomato salad and some dried plantains. If the list of popular foods make you feel the limitedness of the cuisine of Costa Rica then you are mistaken. There are a mind boggling variety of foods available and those which will definitely leave you craving for more. There are options like the Frito that is a stew made from pork, Arroz Guacho that is famous for its stickiness, Mondongo, a beef stomach soup, Barbudos, an omelet made from string beans. There are also tasty preparations like the Arroz con Pollo, Olla de Carne, higado en salsa, and pozole. These are the foods in the main course but there are a number of refreshing drinks as well. People enjoy the drinks like the Resbaladara made from rice
and barley. There are other drinks like the horchata, made from
ground rice and cinnamon and also the Pinolillo made from cocoa and
corn.
The food in Costa Rica is sumptuous indeed. It is replete with white
cheese, jelly, French breads, baked beans, sour cream, butter and
also the Gallo Pinto. Lunch and dinner comprises of Olla de Carne,
Papas con Chorizo, steak, casado, fried plantain, Picadillo with
rice and beans.
